Sandy Compton has an eye for natural detail  and a love for landscape, especially the landscape of wild country. He also has a passion for social justice and environmental issues. The Scenic Route is a compilation sifted from a big collection of columns on these and other topics written for The River Journal, a small newspaper based in Clark Fork, Idaho, that was in publication for over 20 years.

Compton’s advice to the original publisher of the Journal to mercifully let the fledgling paper die at a young age went unheeded. Fortunately for Scenic Route fans, a deal was struck that in return for further free advice — which the publisher nearly always ignored — Sandy got to write a column for each Journal about anything he wanted. Also for free.
